Tori kelly who is she
I'm a '90s kid for sure. It's so important to me to take care of my voice. I do a lot of vocal warms-ups right before I go on. I remember growing up singing; even when I was just three years old, I was singing all the time in the house.
My parents said I was singing before I could even talk properly. People will come up to me at shows and tell me that a song touched them in a completely different way than I wrote it. That's fun. Fans translating it in their own way.
I would like to be somebody young people, young girls, can look up to. Why do we even use hashtags? It's just like a sub-thought. Who clicks on hashtags? My style is understated because everything I wear, I want it to have an effortless feel to it. I always want to be comfortable in my clothes and feel like myself, but I like to usually throw in some edge in there somewhere, even just with a leather jacket. But overall, always gotta keep it classy!
I use this brand called Ouidad; they're great. Not Your Mother's is another one. Garnier Fructis. I use a bunch of stuff. Literally, I just throw a huge concoction of stuff in my hair after I get out of the shower, and then I diffuse it. I feel really comfortable when it's just me and a guitar.
It's special and more vulnerable to strip it down. It can be scary, but it's also empowering. My first competition, I guess, singing-wise, I was six years old, and there's a video of it, too. I'm just, like, stick straight. I'm not moving at all, and I'm just singing. Everything I write about either I have gone through or I know somebody has gone through, so it's very close to me, but sometimes it's about taking those feelings and exaggerating on them a little bit: being a bit more dramatic but still keeping them relatable.
I was 16 years old when I did it, and I was curious about how I would do on the show. I started writing music when I was 15 in my bedroom, and I'd post them on MySpace, and from there it shifted to doing covers on YouTube and building my Twitter.
When I walked into the studio, the chorus of 'Nobody Love' was already set. For me, the challenge was to make it have depth. I think, for me, the goal was never really for my EPs to go mainstream. I was like, 'Wow, these are amazing,' which is actually really rare for me because I love to write songs too.
So for me to say, 'Oh my gosh, I have to sing this, these are so beautiful,' was really big. And that's when I was like hey, what if we wrote together and he was into it. I'm his first co-write ever, which is a huge honour. Tori continued, "I was just honoured to be working with him.
What's funny is, and he'll say this too, is that he was actually nervous. I thought that was really weird because he's been in the game for so long and he's so talented. And I was like, 'Why are you nervous? I was naive and came in not knowing what it takes to make a gospel song.
I know a little bit and I love to sing, that's what I know, but I'm basically coming in and trusting him and putting myself into his hands. And he told me that it felt like he was crossing over, because he had never worked with a pop singer or done a whole project with a pop artist. It was just a learning experience for both of us, but I think we joined forces really well. Because I brought things to the table that I had learned from my writing experiences and he did the same.
So it worked out really well. I think it's a combination of the fact that it is one of my favourite hymns and just so classic and beautifully written, along with it being the last song that we wrote for the album. It felt like closing a chapter in a way.
It's also the way we recorded the song. Kirk and I had a vision and I think no one else really understood what we were trying to do. We could hear it so clearly, that it was going to be all vocals, no instruments. No-one could have foreseen just how successful 'Hiding Place' has already been. The project has had the most first-week streams ever for a gospel album, and the reviews have been hugely enthusiastic. Idolator wrote, "There was always the sneaking suspicion that the year-old's voice could soar even higher, that she could open her heart even wider.
That promise finally comes to fruition on 'Hiding Place'. We are committed to protecting your privacy.
